Sam Shalom November 12, 2024

Nestled in the heart of the French Riviera, the enchanting village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a haven for those seeking a blend of rich history, artistic heritage, and breathtaking views. This picturesque village, with its cobbled streets and panoramic vistas, has long been a magnet for artists and dreamers alike. Frédéric Dubreu, broker/owner of Coldwell Banker Art Realty and resident of this charming locale, shares, “Saint-Paul-de-Vence offers a unique blend of history, art, and natural beauty that few places can match. This charming hilltop village has inspired artists and creatives for generations, giving it an exceptional cultural richness. Its picturesque streets are lined with art galleries, boutique shops, and quaint cafés, making every corner a delight to discover.” Indeed, a place that has inspired the likes of Pablo Picasso and Yves Montand, and so many others, makes for an incredibly vibrant village. It is home to the Maeght Foundation, a museum of modern art, in addition to the Picasso Museum.

Along with its historic cultural footprint, Dubreu adds the opportunity to be outdoors is not to be missed. He continues, “the area also provides breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, and with its Mediterranean climate, it’s ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, cycling, or simply strolling through scenic landscapes.” Of course, this not merely for those considering a vacation, but perhaps also a more permanent lifestyle change. Dubreu opines, “the strong sense of community, relaxed pace of life, and proximity to larger hubs like Nice and Cannes add to the allure. Whether for a visit or to call it home, Saint-Paul-de-Vence offers an extraordinary lifestyle in one of the most beautiful settings in the world.”  Whether you’re most interested in the region’s culinary delights, reflecting in the sun-soaked landscape or basking in the Mediterranean lifestyle. Saint-Paul-de-Vence offers a unique blend of cultural richness and natural beauty that makes it an irresistible destination. Read on to learn more!

Where do you live? I live in the enchanting village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, a place known for its rich history, artistic heritage, and breathtaking views of the French Riviera. This village has always held a special place in my heart, and now it is my home.

What is the perfect weekend day like? A perfect weekend here starts with an early morning stroll through the cobbled streets of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, perhaps grabbing a coffee at a local café. Then, a game of tennis in the afternoon before heading to one of the quaint bistros for a leisurely lunch. As the day fades, enjoying a quiet sunset with my dogs by my side completes the day.

What are the common modes of transportation there? In Saint-Paul-de-Vence, most people prefer to walk, especially when exploring the village itself. However, cars are often used for getting to nearby towns or the coastline. The region is also well-served by buses, and some enjoy cycling through the scenic countryside.

Tell us about the foods your area is known for. The cuisine of the Saint-Paul-de-Vence region is an authentic reflection of the Mediterranean lifestyle—simple, fresh, and infused with flavors of the sun-soaked landscape. One of the local treasures is petits farcis niçois, a dish of seasonal vegetables like tomatoes, zucchini, and bell peppers filled with a savory mixture of meats, herbs, and breadcrumbs. It’s a perfect embodiment of the vibrant ingredients this region is known for, with each bite capturing the aroma of Provence.

Seafood is also central to the local cuisine, with delicacies like bouillabaisse (a rich fish stew) and pissaladière, a flavorful tart topped with caramelized onions, anchovies, and olives, which is a staple of Niçoise cuisine. Local markets brim with fresh produce, from aromatic basil and thyme to plump tomatoes and figs, all enhanced by the region’s own olive oil, which is smooth, fragrant, and integral to every Provençal dish.

Additionally, this area produces beautiful wines, especially rosés, that are perfectly paired with the light, sun-kissed fare of the region. Dining here isn’t just about the food but about embracing a leisurely, communal experience that celebrates the Mediterranean lifestyle. With each meal, you’re not just tasting local ingredients; you’re savoring the history, traditions, and artistry of Provençal cooking that make the Côte d’Azur so exceptional.

What is your favourite meal, at home or at a restaurant? My favorite meal is undoubtedly “petits farcis niçois.” Whether prepared at home or enjoyed at a local restaurant, it’s a dish that I never tire of. It embodies the warmth and flavors of the South, and pairs beautifully with a glass of Provençal rosé.

Where do you recommend someone vacation in your region and why? I would highly recommend exploring Èze, an exquisite medieval hilltop village perched above the Mediterranean, offering some of the most breathtaking views on the Côte d’Azur. Wandering through Èze is like stepping back in time; its winding cobblestone streets, ancient stone buildings, and enchanting gardens transport you to another era. Èze is known for its vibrant flora and the exotic Jardin d’Èze, which sits at the village’s highest point and offers unparalleled views of the coast—especially mesmerizing at sunset.

Another gem nearby is Antibes, which combines the charm of an old Provençal town with the liveliness of a seaside city. Antibes has pristine beaches, the world-famous Picasso Museum, and the bustling Marché Provençal, where visitors can savor local delicacies and fresh produce. For those interested in more vibrant urban experiences, Nice is a short drive away, featuring historic architecture, the stunning Promenade des Anglais, and a world-class dining and cultural scene.

Whether you’re drawn to the tranquility of the hilltop villages, the allure of the Mediterranean, or the bustling energy of cities like Nice and Antibes, this region truly has something for every traveler. It’s not just a place to vacation; it’s a place to be inspired by the beauty, culture, and warm Provençal spirit that make this corner of France so unforgettable.

What is your favourite recreational or leisure time activity? I love playing tennis, and there are some fantastic courts nearby. The mild climate makes it possible to enjoy the sport almost year-round. When not on the court, I often take long walks with my dogs along the coastal paths, which offer incredible sea views.

Is there a specialty your area is known for? The region is famous for its art, particularly in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, which has attracted artists for centuries. The Maeght Foundation, a renowned museum of modern art, is one of the area’s cultural highlights. Of course, there’s also a strong emphasis on fine wines and local produce.

Share a little known but interesting fact about the area/region: One fascinating detail about Saint-Paul-de-Vence is its deep-rooted connection to the art world, particularly through artists who were drawn here by the village’s light and charm. While many know it as an artist’s haven, few realize just how influential this small village has been. In the 20th century, it became a retreat for iconic figures like Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, and Yves Montand. The renowned Maeght Foundation, established nearby, is one of France’s most important museums of modern art and houses works by artists such as Joan Miró and Alberto Giacometti.

There’s also a bit of folklore: in the 1940s, the famous La Colombe d’Or hotel became a sanctuary for artists who would often pay for their stay by trading their paintings. To this day, the hotel displays these works, creating a living gallery within its walls. Additionally, the ramparts of Saint-Paul-de-Vence are some of the best-preserved in the region, dating back to the 16th century, and are a lasting testament to their historical importance. So, beyond its visual beauty, the village is steeped in history, culture, and remarkable artistic heritage, making it a truly unique destination.

If you were to live in any other region where we have a Coldwell Banker presence, where would it be and why? I still treasure my home region of northern France, where all my family and many friends live.
